FRACTIONAL LEADERSHIP
Someone accountable for AI governance.
ISO 42001 expects a named owner of the AI Management System. Investors, enterprise buyers, and regulators increasingly ask who that is. A Fractional AI Governance Lead is that person, delivered by an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer, at the fraction of time the role takes.

THE ENGAGEMENT
AI governance falls between functions until someone owns it.
Engineering owns the models, legal owns the risk language, security owns the infrastructure, and nobody owns the AI system as a governed thing. The inventory goes stale, impact assessments happen when someone remembers, and human oversight is described in a policy rather than designed into the product. ISO 42001 requires that ownership to be assigned, because a management system without an accountable owner is documentation.
The question arrives from three directions. Investor diligence asks who is responsible for AI risk. Enterprise procurement asks the same thing in a security questionnaire with an AI annex. Boards read about the EU AI Act and ask what the organisation's exposure is. All three want a name, and none of them accept a committee.
The Fractional AI Governance Lead is that name. The role holds the AI inventory, the risk classification, the impact assessment cycle, the human oversight design, and the reporting line into the board. It is operated at the fraction of time the function needs, which for most organisations is measured in days a month rather than a full-time hire.
THE CREDENTIAL
Why the credential matters.
ISO 42001 was published in December 2023, which makes it a young standard with a correspondingly small practitioner pool. Lead Implementer certification against it remains scarce, and the organisations asking who owns your AI governance have started asking what that person is qualified to hold.
An accountable owner without the credential is an assertion. An accountable owner who holds ISO 42001 Lead Implementer is a demonstrable competence, which is what an investor, an enterprise buyer, or a certification body is actually testing when they ask the question. The role here is delivered by an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer, not delegated to one.
DELIVERABLES
What you receive.
A named accountable owner for the AI Management System
AI system inventory maintained as systems change, not as a one-off
Risk classification against ISO 42001 and EU AI Act exposure, kept current
AI impact assessments for new and materially changed systems
Human oversight design, including what the reviewers actually see and what authority they hold
Governance reporting to the board or executive on a defined cadence
The person who answers when an investor, buyer, or regulator asks who owns AI governance
FIT
Who this is for.
- Organisations with AI in the product where governance has no owner.
- Organisations facing investor diligence on AI governance.
- Organisations implementing or holding ISO 42001 that need the AIMS operated rather than filed.
- Organisations with EU AI Act exposure and no internal AI governance capability.
Not for organisations with no AI in production or development, where the role would have nothing to govern.
Not for organisations that need the AIMS built rather than run. Where the management system does not exist yet, the ISO 42001 Sprint is the right engagement first.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Where organisations go from here.
Where the management system needs building before it can be run, or where the position needs establishing first, these are the usual entry points.

Common questions.
Who owns AI governance today?
A 45 minute scoping call establishes what your AI estate looks like, what the role would need to own, and the day requirement that implies. No sales pitch. If the honest answer is a readiness assessment first, we will say so.
