General purpose AI model
Under the EU AI Act, a model that displays significant generality and can competently perform a wide range of tasks. Obligations on providers applied from 2 August 2025, with models placed on the market before that date required to comply by 2 August 2027.
Why it matters: if you build on a third party model you are usually a deployer rather than a provider, and the obligations differ.
